A Little Bit of Philly in Virginia Gardens, Florida

My dad worked for WISE potato chips when I was growing up, and his route included Virginia Gardens. I worked with him every summer and am very familiar with the area.

A Little Bit of Philly is in the same strip mall as Vito Bakery, where I ate croqueta preparadas for breakfast during summers in the eighties.

I showed up at 10:55 AM, just a few minutes before opening, so that I could be the first customer. Unfortunately, they didn’t open up until 11:07 AM. By that point, I was back sitting in my car, practically eating the box my spearmint gum came in.

I like to be prepared when I check out a new place, but I couldn’t find a menu anywhere for A Little Bit of Philly. I’m not into cold ordering, so I checked for their menu on one of those delivery apps.

They have a lunch deal for two slices and a soda can. I gladly take them up on that offer.

I also ordered what I originally came in for a Philly cheesesteak. And since I’m here already, what the hell? Let’s throw in a meatball sub to wash everything down.

This Philly Cheese Steak was precisely what I was hoping for. I was initially surprised to see mushrooms (canned, not fresh) in it, but it was great.

A Little Bit of Philly uses Amoroso Rolls for the bread. The Provolone cheese slices are on the bottom of the sub, and I got just enough of it with every bite. It smelled every bit as good as it looked, too.

The cheese slices were good and better than 100% of the chains. I regret not adding pepperoni to them and, even more, not ordering a Sicilian pie. I’ve heard that’s the way to go.

I took one bite of the meatball sub and was down for the count. I was beyond stuffed.

In case you were wondering, it’s a homemade meatball and definitely worth a try. I ended up having it later that night while watching American Ninja Warrior.

For next time, I see strombolis and calzones in my future.
