I’ve passed the Pickle Barrel on the way to and from Charm City Burger Company & El Jefe Luchador so many times I’ve lost count. I always think the same thing, I will stop here on my way home. The problem is the Pickle Barrel is closed by the time I’m heading home (they close at 5PM). So there was a change of plans this time, I start my Deerfield Beach adventure at the Pickle Barrel and solve this longstanding problem. I’m with one of my cohorts, Chunktronics on this trip.
While we’re looking up and down the menu, over and over (even though we know what we’re ordering) I happily read that not only are they family owned but that they’ve been in the same location as when they open 39 years ago in 1974. There is some seating but most folks are taking their sandwiches to go. There’s also delivery if you live in the area and if you wanna create your own sandwiches at home all the cold cuts and Cheeses are available for purchase by the pound.
I go classic with the Pastrami on Rye and Chunktronics is torn but finally decides on the Corned Beef, Pastrami & Swiss on a Marbled Rye. While he was choosing I also pick up a Black & White Cookie, you can’t go wrong with those.
The Sandwiches come with some Pickle Spears which I turn a blind eye to. I add some Mustard to my Pastrami Sandwich and I’m good to go. No complaints here, it’s a solid sandwich. Chunktronics sneaks a bite of mine which he prefers to his Corned Beef & Pastrami combo. I never even look in the direction of his sandwich, I’m a one sandwich kinda guy.
Once we’re finished I take my Cookie home, which I enjoy later with a strong cup of joe.
There’s a reason the Pickle Barrel has been around for nearly 40 years. It fills the Sandwich needs of the neighborhood and it makes out-of-towners like me feel at home. It’s my kinda place.
