It’s always great to come across a surprise. Marcela called to inform me about this new pizza shop called Pizza Johny’s (one N not two), which had opened up in the old Slice & Ice spot on Sunset Drive. A friend of ours had just mentioned how much he liked it.
Besides just passing along the info, she brought me some pizza and a chicken parm, my one-two pizza joint punch, as an added plus. I patiently waited at my parent’s house in Westchester, a good 15-minute drive from this place.
*After I rip the box out of her hands, the first thing I do is open it and take a look at the pie. She is stunning. I likes her a lot, yes, like with an S.
The homemade garlic rolls are a little different cause there’s a sweet undertone to the flavor. Now we’re two for two; let’s check out the chicken parm.
Chicken Parmesan?
What the hell? This isn’t a sub; it’s a stromboli. I’m not angry; I’m just confused for a second. Marcela does confirm that I’m not delusional and that it is indeed a stromboli, a chicken parmesan stromboli.
Can you imagine a world where Hot Pockets used fresh products and tasted very good? If that world existed, that pocket would be this chicken parmesan stromboli, ’nuff said.
I would later find out that the owner was formerly partners with the fella from Little Louie’s Pizza, which makes sense since the food is similarly excellent. It also explains both restaurants selling pizza pinwheels or, as they’re called here, spirals.
On a later visit to Pizza Johny’s, I tried the meatball sub, and boy, oh boy, was it good. It was so good that it made my best meatball subs in Miami list.
