Just my luck that I would arrive at Pastrami Dan’s after it’s closing time (4PM). I notice the Old Chicago Pizzeria right around the corner which I don’t remember seeing before so it’s pretty much a given I’m stopping in.
I could say the menu is electric in that there’s Hot Dogs, Italian Beef and Pizza on the menu but I know better since Chicago food is the theme here under their Pizzeria banner.
I’ve pretty much given up on ordering Mozzarella Sticks anywhere but the description for the Motzy Stix read 6 blocks of fresh mozzarella, uh no. It kinda disappointed me.
Next up was the Chicago Dog and Italian Beef Sandwich, both are Chicago standards. I’m not expert as to the “authenticity” of these guys but on the are they good meter, I’d say absolutely.
In between there, we snuck in an order of Meatballs, which were not going to get the Chef into the running for a James Beard Award but worth ordering.
We made the mistake of assuming (yes, I know what happens when you assume) that when we ordered a Pizza we’d get the Deep Dish. Instead what arrived was their Old Chicago Style Pizza. It’s thin…cracker thin and the exact opposite of what I had hoped to be eating. It’s not bad in any way, just not what I was looking for.
I correct the mistake by going Deep Dish. There is a little wait for this Pizza but well worth it. Number one and very important, it was visually stunning. The Deep Dish was as rich and fulfilling as it looks but by the time it arrived I had filled up on all of the pre-show. One slice in and I was down for the count.
My suggestion? Walk in, order the Deep Dish and don’t have anything beforehand. When it arrives, ravage it but in a nice way. You gotta savor it, trust me.
