Hungry Bear Sub Shop in Miami, Florida

About 50% of the people I mention Hungry Bear Subs think I’m talking about the original Kendall location. If that wasn’t bad enough, they don’t even realize there is a second location in Doral which has been there since 1989, yes, more than 30 years at this point.

So now that we’ve gotten the “there are two Hungry Bears Subs?” commentary out of the way, let me give you a little bit of background about them. The original location was & is still Super Subs Etc., of which I’m a giant fan.

The second location was Hungry Bear which opened across the street from Miami-Dade College – Kendall Campus in 1979. In addition, at one point, there were locations in Homestead, Parkland, and Pembroke Pines.

The founders’ children inherited both shops, with the sister taking over Super Subs Etc. The brother took over Hungry Bear, and his son Nick opened up the Hungry Bear in Doral years later. Below you can find some great family pictures lining the walls of the Hungry Bear Sub Shop Doral location.

Onto the food…

Cheesesteak Sub

Sure, you could get cold-cut subs here, but I come here for the hot subs. The cheesesteak with grilled onions is killer.

If it’s morning, spruce it up by adding some eggs to it. The steak bomb, which adds grilled peppers and mushrooms to the equation, is another popular option.

I’ve tried an interesting Fajita Cheesesteak (steak with onions, green peppers, salsa, sour cream & cheddar cheese). So, if you’re into cheesesteaks and nachos, then this is the guy for you.

The Honey Mustard Chicken Sub (grilled chicken doused & cooked in honey mustard with green peppers & onions) is another favorite here. I prefer mine with no green peppers, less honey mustard, and provolone cheese. The good thing is you can customize it to your liking. It’s a great sub.

Cheeseburgers and Pastrami

The cheeseburger sub with bacon, grilled onions, mayo, mustard & ketchup was it for me. You could bet that I’d be having one of those 75% of the time I’d hit up Hungry Bear.

Now I need to adjust my ordering percentages after laying my eyes and taste buds on the hot pastrami with grilled onions, provolone cheese & yellow mustard.

The subs pictured here are only a tiny percentage of what you can order at Hungry Bear. They’ve been here 25 years doing it right and not cutting corners on quality. It’s why I’m still eating here and plan to for years to come.
