Usually, I’m the one driving, making it difficult to scope out new spots to stop & eat at. Luckily, my cousin Fred was driving, so I could sit back and enjoy the ride around Westchester.
Suddenly, I spotted out of the corner of my eye a restaurant I had never noticed before, A-Mari-Mix Fresh Mex Fusion (now at 13349 SW 42nd Street, Miami). We had just eaten lunch, so we weren’t stopping in, but the next day was wide open.
I knew what I was eating after checking out their menu online. The one thing I didn’t expect was a Specials Board for the day. I figured I would stick to the regular menu for my first visit.
Since that first meal, it has become my go-to restaurant for every occasion. A-Mari-Mix is a mix of Mexican & Cuban food with a Miami twist. While the menu isn’t huge, they cook with love and care.
Tips for First Timers to A-Mari-Mix
The appetizer game is strong at A-Mari-Mix. It’s tough to choose, but we order two different ones. The taquitos (with shredded chicken) are fried nice & crispy with just the right amount of cheese.
There’s always a revolving door for the 2nd appetizer. The chicken nachos are pretty big, and A-Mari-Mix does not skimp on the ingredients; they’re always filling.
I enjoy the tostones (fried plantains) topped with your choice of protein; we always choose ropa vieja (marinated shredded beef), but lately, carnitas have been our thing.
The queso fundido (a blend of melted cheeses) with chorizo is another can’t-miss choice.
The esquite (Mexican corn kernels with cheese & spices) is a recent addition, and we’re just starting to work it into our rotation.
Movin’ on to the Mains
Order something or anything with ropa vieja; they’re all excellent. The burritos are super filling; yes, you can get the exalted ropa vieja in them.
Marcela is partial to the fish tacos, which are mesmerizing and slightly spicy but worth it. If you can’t handle the heat, then let them virginize it for you.
The double-order chicken fajitas at A-Mari-Mix were my thing for a while, but now I’m into the shredded chicken quesadillas. Always ask about which is the hottest pepper they have that day!
Wash down your meal with housemade soft-serve ice cream (fingers crossed for horchata) and a chocolada, yes, chocolate-flavored espresso.
