At first glance, I thought Aretha Frankenstein’s was a restaurant owned by the late great Aretha Franklin. But, just in case, Aretha is a music legend for the uninformed. I knew her initially via her scene in the original Blue Brothers film.
Aretha Frankenstein’s is a monster-ish riff on her name. You throw the word Frankenstein into anything, and I’m all eyes and ears.
It’s a cool-looking restaurant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with part of its ceiling covered in framed cereal box covers. I’ve heard that their breakfast is out of this world.
What’s even more important to what I’m writing about is their Pancake and Waffle Mix. I ordered them directly from the Frankenstein Mills sub-site.
They are available separately in three 32 oz ($32.95) or twelve 32 oz ($94.95) boxes. There is no mix pack with one of each, which is a shame.
These pancake and waffle mixes are in the upper price range compared to their competitors, but if you want quality, you’ll need to pay.
In Spanish, the proverb goes, “lo barato sale caro.” It means spending a little more now will get you a better, more dependable product.
I read that they are more reasonably priced if you are in the Chattanooga area.
Coffee Mug Show-Off
Before I dive into the pancakes and waffles, I want to show off our coffee mugs. Disney fans will enjoy our Poisoned Apple Sculptured Mug from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Maple Syrup Talk
I bought Spring Tree Maple Syrup for maple syrup. It should be available in your local supermarket, but you can also order it online.
Quick story: I asked my Mom to buy this particular maple syrup brand at our local supermarket, Publix. I didn’t mention that it cost almost twenty dollars. As you can imagine, she called me immediately to ensure I wanted a twenty-dollar bottle of maple syrup.
“Yes, mom, I do,” I replied.
Let’s say she still brings this up. It’s not like I tricked her out of twenty bucks; I gave her the money for the little 32 oz jug.
Pancakes and Waffles
At our house, Marcela is the designated pancake and waffle maker. It took a few breakfasts to get the rhythm right with this batter.
The box calls for buttermilk, and you should use live buttermilk from the refrigerated aisle in your grocery store. We also tried powdered buttermilk; it did not achieve the same fluffiness.
We went through the boxes rather quickly, but we did give some of them to a few friends. I preferred the pancakes over the waffles ten to one.
In the waffle’s defense, I grew up eating only pancakes. Sometimes, those nasty microwaveable ones. We were never an Eggo household growing up.
Once we ran out, I ordered some more again. The calvary arrived in a little under a week. As I type this, we’re about to break into our new batches.
Now, someone is selling some of the Aretha Frankenstein mixes at Walmart. My suggestion is that you tread lightly if you’re going to order from there.
The truth is, I always prefer to buy directly whenever I can. Now, the real question is, when will they start selling that biscuit mix?
P.S.: You didn’t ask, but I enjoy these waffles with Dead Sled Coffee.
