Melbourne’s Burger Inn Drive-In

The Burger Inn has been open in Melbourne since 1952. It is one of those “oldie goldies,” as my Mom would say, that can be found only in the Space Coast of Florida.

The menu has not stayed the same; it has been updated to include things like a black bean chipotle burger and the Impossible Burger (plant-based vegan).

I don’t consider either of those “updated” items a burger, but that’s a battle for another day, and no, I did not order them. There is curb service, so you can sit in your car, have a tray hanging outside your window, and eat there like it was back in the day.

You must turn on your headlights when you arrive if you want a server to come out to you. I had just driven a few hours straight, so sitting in my car was the last thing I wanted to do.

There are about ten tables littered around the front of the Burger Inn, with a few counter seats inside. Much like I did in high school, I took my place at the table on the side, partially obscured from everyone’s view.

I knew I was doing a chili dog and a cheeseburger, but I threw in the chili at the last moment on a whim. Thinking about it now, it didn’t make much sense to order chili and a chili dog.

I loved the chili, but it was a mistake to add that nacho cheese ooze to it. Straight-up onions alone would have made the chili perfect.

I ordered the dog with chili, onions, and mustard; it was a good move by me, the BB!

Once I noticed that the burger menu wasn’t adhering to its old-school roots, I went with the bacon cheeseburger. I lathered the bottom bun with ketchup, mustard, and mayo, and I was in heaven.

It’s just how I would do it when I was a kid, and now I do it when I want to relive those great childhood memories. If I had to do it all over again, I still wouldn’t have eaten in my car.

But I would have made my burger a vegan double, with extra vegan mayo and vegan mozzarella cheese. I’m just kidding; everyone knows those things don’t exist.

  1. I stopped here today for the first time. I took home one of their cheeseburgers. I think that might be the best cheeseburger I have ever had. I will definitely be back
