Burgers and Shakes in Lexington, Kentucky

When I read about Burgers and Shakes in Lexington, I knew it would fit nicely with the group restaurants I had just visited: A&W Burgers Chicken Floats, Blue Door Smokehouse, Frisch’s Big Boy, and Parkette Drive-In (R.I.P.). The no-frills, keep-it-simple menu at Burgers and Shakes is what I like to see when I visit an old-school burger joint.

I skipped out on fries and went full speed ahead for the chili dog and double cheeseburger with a chocolate milkshake. When I unwrapped the dog, I was ecstatic to see no beans in the equation.

I made a mustard trail down the middle and took a swig of that chocolate shake. Yes, I had no choice, as it was so thick and tasty. Damn, that chili dog was so good too.

The Burgers and Shakes double cheeseburger was everything I was hoping it would be, but I cheated a little bit. I added some mayo, mustard, and ketchup to the bottom bun. I did feel guilty for doing that, but honestly, it’s what I would have done when I was a kid.

Next time I’m in Lexington, I solemnly swear only to add pickles and mustard, *scout’s honor.

  1. Good Afternoon,

My name is Cheryl Poe, and this year I am the AmeriCorps VISTA for One Parent Scholar House. One Parent Scholar House is a local nonprofit organization in Lexington that supports single parents who are full-time students working on their post-secondary education. The primary purpose of One Parent Scholar House is to help parents and their young children develop the life skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency. The program also offers comprehensive services that not only include housing but also education, counseling, workshops, and support from neighbors and staff. One Parent Scholar House also provides special activities that help the residents stay engaged with members of their community.

This year, One Parent Scholar House is excited to be hosting the 12th Annual Education Builds Hope luncheon on Thursday, June 13 at the Carrick House. At this event, we will once again be offering Mystery Boxes to raise additional dollars that will go directly toward fulfilling our mission. Our goal is to collect 50 donated items, whether gift cards, gift items/packages, or experiences so that 50 attendees who make a $50 donation at the event will receive a random Mystery Box prize.

The reason that I am emailing you today is to see if you would be interested in supporting us through the donation of an item/package, gift card, or experience that would get people excited about our Mystery Boxes! We strive to have each Mystery Box hold a prize valued at $50 or more. To show you our appreciation, we would recognize you as a Mystery Box sponsor at the event.
One Parent Scholar House relies on the generosity of people like you in the community, and we hope you can support us in celebrating the educational and family goals of those we serve. I look forward to hearing from you soon and am happy to answer any questions.

    Thank you,

    Cheryl
