Burgers & Suds in Pompano Beach, Florida

Burgers & Suds (261 E. Commercial Blvd, Oakland Park) opened up quietly in mid-February with very little fanfare replacing a burrito spot. Then, a few months later, Jeff Eats visited and also took a liking to it, which meant that it moved up to become one of my must-tries.

And so there it sat for a few months til one day I said to myself, let’s do this. Let’s being the cumulative me, of course.

I was caught off guard by the looks of Burgers & Suds when I pulled up. It’s in the middle of a revitalization; that’s something the owner told me when I mentioned that Jeff Eats’ post brought me there.

Yes, it’s divey and a hole in the wall, but that also brings a charm that endears it more to me than another slick, overly thought-out burger concept. Before driving up from Miami, I had done my homework and reviewed the menu online.

The pizza & bacon-wrapped hot dogs sounded like an interesting idea if I had someone else with me, which I didn’t. So I settled on their Knockout Chicken Wings tossed in hot sauce, although they were drizzled.

These were great crispy grilled wings with a very bright-tasting hot sauce. I wasn’t more than three wings in when my burger and fries arrived.

Burger Talk

My first instincts were to order a Patty Melt. Yes, patty melts do count as burgers regardless of what someone folks think.

The description of Burger & Suds’ Patty Melt reads like this: Swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms, onions, and thousand island dressing served on marble rye bread.

However, the additions of mushrooms & thousand island dressing dissuade me from ordering it. So instead, I go with the 1/2 pounder burger with American cheese; hold the lettuce, tomato, onion & pickle.

The fries are topped with a nice seasoning that makes me eat them at such a pace that I almost forget there’s a burger on the plate too. First bite in, and a great crunch comes from the toasted bun.

It tastes like an awesome summertime burger. By that, I mean the char-grilled flavor comes through and puts me in a grilling state of mind. It’s a solid burger; no complaints here.

Has anybody out there in Burger Beast land been here? Tell us all about it in the comments section below.

Burgers & Suds Moves to Pompano

A few years later Burgers & Suds would move to 360 SE 15th St in Pompano Beach, Florida. These were much nicer digs, and I’ve gotta assume this is the type of place they originally envisioned.

The menu was much more fleshed out too. All of the appetizers were attractive, but Marcela and I chose the soft pretzels with beer cheese dipping sauce, bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers, and the deep-fried mac ‘n cheese bites.

Each one of the starters was good and satisfying, but my main takeaway was that the jalapeño ranch dipping sauce that came with the poppers was next level. Will someone please pour some more of the jajapeño ranch into a shot glass? Or maybe there’s some way to mainline it?

There was a special going on for a burger named El Chapo, which I could not pass up. This here fella came with a 1/2 burger patty topped with Provolone cheese, jalapeño queso, and deep-fried jalapeños on a brioche bun.

While I usually try to steer clear of burgers with a bunch of shit piled on them, it was good. Well, it was better than good; El Chapo was great, but I’ll stick to the classic next time.

Burgers & Suds closed in the Summer of 2021.
