Clancy’s Nashville Hot Chicken & Cuban Sandwich Chips

We were out on our weekly sauce delivery route to markets when I remembered that Aldi had just launched a new Cuban Sandwich flavored potato chip. I was heading down US1 after a stop at Babe’s Meat & Counter when I spotted the sign for Aldi in the distance. After crossing all four lines, I made a sharp right into the strip mall. Don’t worry, I used my turning signal and did not cut anyone off, I promise.

I pull up to the front and drop Marcela off with one mission, buy 3 bags of Clancy’s Cuban Sandwich potato chips. For my trouble, I got the ol’ you’re ridiculous eye-roll as she opened the door. After parking, where I could keep an eye on the door to the market, I continued on my social media food escapades.

Well that was quick…not really

What seemed like forever and was really probably only 10 minutes she was back with a smile on her face. What are you smiling at, I thought. Did they have them? Yes, and I found these. My eyes lit up when she pulled out a bag of Clancy’s Nashville Hot Chicken kettle chips. Now that was a great surprise.

We had not eaten breakfast, and its almost noon, so lunchtime was imminent. Marcela busted open the bag of Cuban Sandwich chips first. After toasting with our first chips, we took a bite and looked at each other. We did the look into each other’s eyes as if to see if we agreed without even speaking routine. Well, they didn’t taste like a Cuban Sandwich. Both sets of eyes thought the same thing.

After a few more tries, all we could really agree on is that these were good kettle chips with a hint of pickle on the tail end. When we arrived at our next stop, Marcela got off to deliver the cases, and I took the opportunity to rip open the Nashville Hot Chicken chips.

Well, they don’t taste like chicken, but they do have the flavor and vibe of Nashville Hot seasoning. The heat wasn’t a killer, but if your friend is a wimp, I wouldn’t suggest offering them any. There was also a little bit of sweetness. Now, this fella is a winner!

How many did I eat?

By the time Marcela returns, I’ve probably eaten about ten chips. I offer one, and she looks at me and likes the heat. These babies she enjoyed. It wasn’t till about an hour later when I realized that she thought she was still eating the Cuban Sandwich chips and had somehow had picked out bad chips to start with.

So there you have it, the Cuban Sandwich kettle chips are nothing to write home about, while my new best bud, the Nashville Hot Chicken chips, are winners. I wish I had two more bags of this one instead of my family’s countryman. Now, what do I do with these two extra Cuban Sandwich bags?

I dropped by my parent’s house, and my dad became the proud recipient of the first one. The second is getting donated to Miami Herald food critic Carlos Frias. I’m interested to hear his thoughts on them.

  1. It would greatly help if you included the back of the packages in your photo gallery. These sound interesting but this post doesn’t provide all details.
