Wynwood is a part of town I visit only if something catches my eye. Enter Damwich.
While everyone is busy opening smash burger joints in Wynwood, sandwich-loving couple Adam Mizrahi and Ana Lopez thought, “What about a sandwich shop?“
I asked them about the origins of their name, and their answer made total sense to me:
“We love dam sandwiches. Adam always eats sandwiches, and we wanted to reflect on how awesome sandwiches are when they are made well.“
-Ana Lopez
The menu features a variety of sandwiches subcategorized into Ham and Pork, Turkey, Italian, Beef, Chicken, Seafood, and Vegetarian. Since they’re not making traditional sandwiches, there are names like Dam Tony (Cuban), Dam Muffy (Muffaletta), and Dam con Bistec (Pan con Bistec), which doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes-type mind to figure out.
The bread comes from a local Miami bakery that delivers daily to them. Currently, six signature sauces are made in-house: garlic cilantro, garlic mayo, marinara, olive mayo, tzatziki, and a basil spread.
When I tried to squeeze them for a favorite, they couldn’t pick one. Adam did say, “I love all of them. Sandwiches are really about your mood. Sometimes, you want something greasy, hot, or cold.”
But they did say that the Dam Buffalo (Spicy Buffalo Chicken made with hand-breaded chicken tenders), Dam Mean (Ham, Bacon, Cheese), Dam Franklin (Cheesesteak), and Dam Saltado (Lomo Saltado) are their signature creations.
Damwich is only available for pickup in Wynwood and through regular delivery avenues, but most importantly, it is available through its website, Damwich.com, where there’s a 50% off deal with the code DAM50. It’s how we first tried them.
“We just opened and are improving daily. We will also add more sandwiches, including breakfast sandwiches (and open earlier) soon.“
–Adam Mizrahi
Adam invited Marcela and me to their kitchen to sample a bunch of Damwiches. One of my picks is the Dam Buffalo; you gotta love that the chicken tenders are hand-breaded and not some average prepackaged tender. The Dam Franklin is a cheesesteak with garlic mayo that ties this sando together. I’m a mayo on my cheesesteak kinda fella, so I was all about it.
There’s also the Dam Pizzaz with Genoa salami, mozzarella, black olives, mushrooms, oregano, marinara sauce, and olive mayo. I recently converted from an olive hater to an olive lover, so I’m all about this guy. The last must be the Dang Ham and Cheddar (no cursing) off the kid’s menu; hear me out. Ham and cheese sandwiches are the ultimate form of comfort food.
I’ve been eating these guys since I was five years old when my Mom packed them for lunch at school. This is a simple but perfectly executed ham and cheese sandwich. It’s ham, cheddar cheese, and crusty pressed bread, and that’s it. That’s all you need for a perfect little ditty like this.
I almost forgot about those Dam Homemade Potato Chips. How could I? Marcela and I couldn’t stop eating them in the car on the drive home. The round potato chips are fried fresh, seasoned with a secret blend they wouldn’t reveal to me, and cilantro mayo for dipping. Dam good.
That only leaves one question: how will Damwich celebrate National Sandwich Day on November 3rd? Stay tuned to my upcoming post to find out! In the meantime, you can follow them at @Eat.Damwich on Instagram or download their app for IOS and Android.
