The Dutch Oven in Clarksdale, Mississippi

An old passenger train depot is what The Dutch Oven restaurant in Clarksdale, Mississippi calls home. They are an Amish bakery predominantly known for baked goods and sandwiches. The Dutch Oven is only open from 10 AM till 3 PM on weekdays and closed on weekends, so plan accordingly.

After eating many heavy meals on my trip around the South, it was nice to enjoy a lunch that did not involve fried food.

Marcela started with taco soup and thoroughly enjoyed the daily casserole of gourmet chicken and rice with a macaroni salad.

Pimento Cheese at The Dutch Oven

I couldn’t decide between two sandwiches, so I ordered the pimento cheese and pork BBQ sandwiches on freshly baked butterhorn. I took one bite of each sandwich and chose the pimento cheese as my guy. The pulled pork, while good, was heavier than I was hoping for this lighter lunch.

The house-made pimento cheese on that buttery butterhorn was a gland slam. So, halfway through the sandwiches, I decided to stop and keep some to enjoy on the back porch at the shack we were staying in later in the day.

What About Some Pie?

You shouldn’t leave without having a slice of pie,” so of course we obliged. Marcela and I were sharing the French Silk Pie, or so I thought. Two bites were the most I managed on this dessert, and I was lucky even to get that many.

It was absolutely killer, but Marcela might be a better judge due to the limited time I had with it, lol.

Whenever I return to Clarksdale, my first stop will be at The Dutch Oven for another of those pimento cheese sandwiches and their buttery roll. They were so good that we took a bag of mini butterhorns for breakfast the next day.
