I usually try to keep my expectations low regarding hot dog restaurants in South Florida. I find it hard to top the iconic Arbetter Hot Dogs in Westchester or Sweet Dogs in the Flagami part of Miami.
I was intrigued when I heard that a new food truck named El Alpha Dog had just opened in Doral by the same team behind Bocas House. The menu below includes some creative dogs and three burger burritos.
I was with my cousin Fred, and we started with some tasty Nestea peach tea. I’m not a tea fan, and I had a couple of those guys instead of my usual cola.
The Special Teque Balls (8 per order) are round tequeños with spicy secret sauce, bacon & green onions, and black sesame seeds. That spicy secret sauce is most definitely spicy and needs to be bottled and sold.
What Did We Eat from El Alpha Dog?
Alpha Dog – Alpha sauce, onions, scallions, pork belly, Korean BBQ sauce, toasted white sesame seeds and cilantro
The Grilled Cheese Dog – pink sauce, onions, bacon, corn sauce, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, crispy corn on top
Alpha Truffle Dog – Truffle sauce, bacon, mac ‘n’ cheese, crunchy popcorn, truffle oil and black sesame seeds
Clásico Caraqueño – Cabbage, onions, cilantro, mayo, ketchup, mustard, garlic sauce and grated pecorino cheese
El Shanty – Alpha sauce, onions, scallions, double pork belly, Korean BBQ sauce, toasted white sesame seeds and cilantro
Which Alpha Dog was Better?
No one could come close to the Alpha Dog. Unfortunately, El Shanty had no dog and was a double order of that incredible pork belly, so it doesn’t count towards my choice for the best dog of the night.
If I were you, I’d order 2 of the Alpha Dog the first time you eat here, and if you’ve got some room, then try out the other guys. We could not stop talking about the Alpha Dog while we ate everything else.
Ok, now that I think about it, only eat one Alpha Dog and grab one of the stellar burger burritos (available in single or double-patty versions). We tried all three burritos, but the Porky won the flavor game.
The Porky is a mouthful of lettuce, cabbage, Korean BBQ sauce, Alpha sauce, mayo, mustard, ketchup, ham, an Angus burger, extra thick-cut bacon, onions, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and special fries + fried egg.
I could do without the lettuce, but then again, I wouldn’t say I like lettuce, so that is in keeping with my routine. They were all worth a try, but Porky was just a little notch above the others.
It’s been quite a while since a food truck has created a buzz, much less delivered on it. However, Alpha Dog nailed it again, and I’m excited to go back and try some of the other creations.
I’m not going to lie to you; that half-pound “El Mini” is calling my name. But it would be best if you were mentally prepared for something like that, especially when I’ve only got Alpha Dog on the brain.
El Alpha Dog Food Truck is PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
