When I mentioned on Instagram that I was hitting up Memphis for food, one particular restaurant got mentioned more than the rest, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. Usually, I would first assume that the place in question is a tourist trap.
After investigating a bit, it appeared that Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is the real deal. There was only one way to test that theory, eat then speak so I did.
The fried pickles arrived first and are worth ordering. I was popping those like they were going out of style. The fried green tomatoes didn’t do anything for me, but then again, I’m not a giant tomato fan.

I probably should have chosen better sides, but they did their job. The fries were a little on the salty side. Now onto one of the new loves of my life, Gus’s Fried Chicken.
The chicken is fried fresh. It had not been sitting around that’s for sure. It was still steaming hot when it arrived, and it was a battle just to control myself from attacking. I dove in, once a reasonable period (at least in my mind) of cooling had passed.
I went the two chicken breast and one wing route, yes white meat. I prefer white meat, sorry, but I do.
It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t touch dark meat as I think it’s great too, but given an opportunity to choose, it’s always breast FTW. One last thing, this fried chicken is spicy, which made it that much better.
Dessert Time
Apple pie is one of my favorite desserts, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of a fried apple pie with vanilla ice cream. It was a sweet, flaky apple pie with a good grade vanilla ice cream on it.
Gus’s Fried Chicken will be my first stop on any trip to Memphis, plus it’s good to know that they’ve got locations all over.
