Hangry Al’s Sub Shop in Pembroke Pines, Florida

Remember when Hangry Al’s Sub Shop was in Glenvar Heights near Kendall? I do; it was only a few years ago. Then, in early 2020, Hangry’s Al’s moved to Pembroke Pines.

Every time I had a plan to hit up their new location, something else popped up that I couldn’t get out of doing. So I woke up one morning and said, today is the day.

Marcela and I arrived a few minutes early and waited in my car until the official opening time of 10:30 AM. We were hungry, but we were not ready to order.

After Marcela pulls the ol’ “I’ll share whatever you order routine,” a slew of comfort food deliciousness is on its way to our tiny table. We’re talking seasoned fries, a half-pound cheeseburger sub, a quarter-pound cheeseburger, and a homemade meatball sub with a pecan banana cake to settle our stomachs.

Lately, I have an aversion to fries unless they’re fresh-cut. While these were not, their seasoning made me bend my current mindset.

Hangry Al’s was all out of burger buns, so my fresh beef quarter-pound came on buttered and griddled bread. This ended nicely since I can’t imagine eating this any other way.

You’ve got to love happy accidents!

The half-pound cheeseburger sub is one heavy mother f’er with American cheese, bacon, grilled onions, mushrooms, mustard, catsup & mayo. The trio of sauces and bacon were my addition; everything else comes standard.

I couldn’t remember why I never ate the burger sub at their original location until Al reminded me that they weren’t using fresh beef patties then. Thank goodness he came to his meaty senses.

What a freaking great sandwich, wowsers!

When you think there’s no way there is anything else equally as significant on Hangry Al’s menu, enter Mama’s Meatball Sub. Yes, the meatballs are also homemade.

When I separated the halves, a meatball rolled out of the sando. Something about that happening excited me.

Marcela and I ate the entire grilled cheeseburger melt and split the burger and meatball subs. The good thing is that I knew I’d have a great lunch the following day.

Hangry Al’s is known for their fantastic carrot cake, which I’ve had before. However, I was dangerously close to having a couple of cookies when this cake with banana frosting & pecans called my name.

I always answer the call for a banana-based dessert. The frosting was killer, and the cake was not too shabby either.

Better than the carrot cake? It’s not better, but it’s definitely on its level.

If you’re into spice, don’t forget the Hangry Heat. I imagine it would be perfect on the chicken parmesan sub; I will make that a reality on my next visit.
