When we left Miami for a road trip through Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, and Florida, I did not have Hometown Hot Dogs in Millersport on our list of stops.
I did have a horrible cough the entire trip, and I decided I’d stay in on our last day in Columbus, Ohio. The plan was to recoup a little bit for the final leg of the drive.
It turned out that just 9 minutes from where we were staying was a place called Hometown Hot Dogs. As the guys were planning what they were going to do for the day, I suggested they have breakfast at Hometown Hot Dogs and then drop me off afterward.
We arrived around 10:30 am and took a seat at a four-top. Our waitress, Kim, who turns out to be the owner, convinces them to give up their scrambled egg dreams and go full-on dogs and burgers. We’re now all on the same page.
West Virginia Dog?
If you haven’t noticed by reading previous wiener restaurants I’ve visited, I always order chili cheese dogs right out of the gate. It takes a lot to convince me otherwise.
Kim made a valiant effort to convert me to slaw. When I wouldn’t budge, she brought me a West Virginia Dog (before receiving any of my food) anyway.
All I’ve got to say is WOWSERS!
And then my coney dogs and double cheeseburger arrived, along with a pretty significant portion of fresh-cut fries, halfway down the West Virginia Dog. I stopped and formulated a plan of attack.
Unfortunately, all scenarios led to trying to eat everything. I chomp down on the chili cheese dog, and yes, it’s excellent, but I can’t get that West Virginia Dog out of my mind.
Hidden Burger Gem Alert
After a change of plans, I bite into the double cheeseburger. It’s official: Hometown Hot Dogs is a hidden gem.
What a fantastic burger! I can’t believe I’ve been staying nine minutes from Hometown Hot Dogs (in Baltimore, Ohio) for five days, and that now is when we eat here. There is absolutely no way I’m leaving even a crumb of that double cheeseburger.
In between bites of the double chee, I toss down fries dipped in red sauce. When it’s all said and done, there are some fresh-cut fries scattered about, and I’m beyond stuffed. Everyone is now ready for a nap.
Don’t Forget Dessert!
But of course, it doesn’t end there since there was a salted caramel chocolate cake, house-made, of course. Three bites in, and I tap out. So, you got me, Hometown Hot Dogs.
I love you, and I’ll be back.
P.S.: We went straight back to the rented house we stayed at, and no one went out that day.

A Return to Hometown Hot Dogs in Millersport
As promised, I returned triumphantly to Hometown Hot Dogs a few years later, but this time for some breakfast. Again, it was great to see Kim and catch up with her.
I was very close to ordering a coney but stuck to my guns and ate the cheese omelet with toast and home fries. A cup of coffee washed everything down the old pipes.
It was some excellent home cooking from an old friend; I have no complaints here.
