Three years ago, I finally found myself at the Kewpee Hamburgers location in Downtown Lima, Ohio. It was an out-of-body experience.
Kewpee Hotel Hamburgs was founded in Flint, Michigan in 1923. The chain fractured into separate burger joints, including Halo Burger in Flint.
White Castle is the only older burger chain still operating. There are three Kewpee restaurant locations in Lima, Ohio: Downtown, East, and West.
One last important fact is that Dave Thomas grew up eating at Kewpee Hamburgers, which inspired Wendy’s.
It had been a long wait, but I could finally visit and eat at the original downtown restaurant. When it was time to figure out where I’d be signing copies of my book All About the Burger, I knew stopping at Kewpee in Lima was mandatory.
I wouldn’t take no for an answer. Lucky for me, they said yes.
But before the signing, it was time for lunch!
Kewpee Burgers, Pies and Malts
I got to enjoy another delectable double cheeseburger with onions, pickles, and yellow mustard, while Marcela went with lettuce, tomato, ketchup, and mustard on hers.
For some reason, we did not take pictures of the chili or the French fries. But we captured the Very Berry Pie that Marcela enjoyed and the Frosted Malt, which I needed.

Book Signing at Kewpee Hamburgers East
I signed a bunch of books, hung out with them, and talked about Kewpee’s history with Scott Shutt, VP of Kewpee Hamburgers. Later, I appeared on a local TV station that covered the event.
It was a fantastic day, if you ask me, and true to their catchphrase, my heart went flippity-flop. Thank you to Scott Schutt and everyone at Kewpee Hamburgers for treating Marcela and me like kings.
