On my way to grab some kolaches at the Texas-based Shipley’s Donuts, which has an outpost in Jacksonville, I drove past Lubi’s Hot Subs. After securing the kolaches, I circled back to find out what Lubi’s was all about.
Lulu Wallace founded Lubi’s in 1969 and, at one point, had multiple locations around town. But, as I was about to find out, they’re known for their steamed subs.
When checking out the menu, the Mean Machine called my name until I realized it had lettuce and tomato, a total non-starter for me!
After choosing the Famous Lubi, I couldn’t take my eyes off the jumbo hot dogs section of the menu. Next thing I know, I’m in for a Famous Lubi and chili dog.
I’m a non-bean chili kind of fellow, but setting aside my bias, this was a damn fine chili dog. It may have been a little much for breakfast, actually too much, so I set it aside for later after one bite.
My fundamental mistake was overlooking the meatball sub. It could have been a contender.
The Famous Lubi
I unwrap the Famous Lubi and gaze at this beauty, pondering how to pick it up without making a mess of myself. A fork and knife are included in the container because it’s impossible without them.
After eating their signature sub, the Famous Lubi, left me speechless. It features fresh ground sirloin, steamed and topped with American cheese, chopped onions, hot peppers, mayo, and yellow mustard.
What a delicious combination! Without a doubt, Lubi’s Hot Subs has earned the Burger Beast Approval.
One last look at Lubi’s Hot Subs before I head back to my hotel, where Marcela never finds out what I ate…until now.
