Rock That Burger in Kendall was originally a food truck named the Yellow Submarine. The Yellow Submarine would be the first Miami street food vendor to announce the transition from a truck to a full-fledged brick-and-mortar restaurant.
An almost one-year delay would allow Latin House the first to complete the switch from mobile to permanent. Rock That Burger did eventually open.
Then, it took some months for them to get their food mojo working again. Their fans had already waited patiently for their return, so we were all good with it.
Andy and Yayo, the brother duo, are still at it in Kendall with their Rock That Burger. Don’t forget to have one of their Paradise City dogs; it’s a Burger Beast Burgie Award winner!
Rock that Burger and Yellow Submarine Food Truck
Rock That Burger in Miami
Anyone who followed the Miami Food Truck scene in South Florida from the beginning (late 2009) knows of the Yellow Submarine. They were the third food truck to show up in Miami.
It really made me look differently at the Colombian-style street food they were serving. I’ve grown tired of all the frozen patty and recycled sauces all those joints were using.
The Yellow Submarine burgers and hot dogs had better versions of similar sauces, and behind them was a great burger or hot dog that could stand alone with no toppings necessary. It was a sad moment when the food truck shut down.
Luckily, they had committed to opening Rock That Burger in Kendall. They were gone for close to a year. When Rock That Burger first opened in August 2012, I ate there twice. I was not sold on it.
It didn’t seem to be the same; there was something off. I figured I’d give them a few months and hope that they would find their groove.
They’re Back!
Marcela was always a huge fan of their Killer Queen sandwich, which was not on the original Rock That Burger menu. When we walked in, it was great to see it on the specials board.
We started with the cheese fries. You could also add chili, too, but I’d like to see the Yellow Submarine fries with the pineapple and housemade tomato sauces make the menu.
I’m sure they’d make them for anyone who asks, but some folks don’t even know about it, so maybe it’s now a Secret Menu item.
Back in the day, the Killer Queen came in long sub-style bread, but because of the strip mall they’re in, it’s not possible (there’s one of those chain sub shops). The Killer Queen is a buffalo chicken sandwich with buffalo chicken cold cuts instead of the usual slab of chicken.
The rest of this sando consists of mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, garlic mayo, and pesto sauce. Whoever invented this combination of flavors deserves a national day named after them.
Let’s Get This Burger Party Started
Rock That Burger allows you to create your own burger with more than fifteen options. The burger is a well-seasoned patty with spices mixed into the beef—another great flavor overload.
The Yellow Submarine burger comes with mozzarella cheese, housemade tomato sauce, housemade mustard, pineapple sauce, and crushed potato chips. It normally brings lettuce, tomato, and onion, but I ixnayed those.
Some people will tell you to go to Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York for the best hot dog you’ll ever have. I’m telling you that the Paradise City dog from the Yellow Submarine (formerly the Yellow Dog) is one of the best hot dogs I’ve ever had.
The all-beef hot dog is sliced and griddled face down on the flat top to get a nice crispy exterior. The toppings are the same as the Yellow Submarine burger. It’s the real deal.
So all is well that ends well in Rock That Burger land. Come by, enjoy the food, and check out the restaurant (if you’re a music fan, you will love the decor).

Yellow Submarine Food Truck
In the town where I was born
lyrics to the Beatles song Yellow Submarine
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines
So we sailed on to the sun
Till we found a sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
So begins the song “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles. The Yellow Submarine food truck has a music theme running through it. Two brothers, Yayo and Andy are its owners.
All of the sandwiches are named after popular song titles. There’s Lady Madonna (The Beatles), Imagine (John Lennon), Killer Queen (Queen), Original Sin, and New Sensation (both INXS).
While we were waiting for our food, I heard songs from bands like Information Society, The Beatles, INXS, and Skid Row. It was an eclectic but great tune selection. Marcela ordered the Killer Queen, which is their chicken sandwich.
The Killer Queen sandwich is topped with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, hot peppers, olives, mayo, and pesto. I’m not a fan of so many greens, but I thought it had some good flavors.
Marcela loved it, and I do mean loved it. I thought enough of it that I took one to go sans the green stuff and liked it a whole bunch more. Now, onto the wiener and burger.
The Yellow Dog is Special
I got my hands on the Yellow Dog first. I forgot to mention the burgers and hot dogs are served Colombian comida-rapida style. Colombian style means plenty of sauces and crushed chips as a topping. Well, it’s more than that, but you get the drift.
The Yellow Dog has provolone cheese, ketchup, mayo, mustard, pineapple sauce, homemade sauce, and crushed potato chips. This is the best hot dog I’ve had in a long while and definitely the best Colombian style I’ve eaten.
It’s sliced in half and then grilled on a flat top. The toppings did not overpower the taste of the beef hot dog, which tends to happen with Colombian-style hot dogs.
For the Yellow Burger, I saw them pull out a fresh meat patty, not some frozen puck. The brothers confirmed that it has chorizo mixed into it. This is another case where the burger was a great surprise.
The Yellow Burger has all the dog‘s toppings plus lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The toppings did not overpower the meat and chorizo flavor. It’s also served on a fresh roll. I loved it.
Make sure you track down and check out the Yellow Submarine food truck.
I know we’re thinking the same thing; let’s go back to the song.
We all live in a yellow submarine
A yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
A yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
If you’re wondering what happened to the actual truck, the former Yellow Submarine is now Mushaboom, a vegan burger truck.
