It seems like just the other day when I mentioned The Salty Donut would start as a popup in Wynwood (November 2015 to be exact). The original six donuts were: Guava + Cheese, Boston Creme, Maple Bacon, Popcorn + Porter, Brown Butter + Salt, and Olive Oil + Citrus.
The coffee menu featured Intelligentsia Espresso and the excellent nitro cold brew from Relentless Roasters (R.I.P.). It’s important to note that two of the donuts are local collaborations: Popcorn + Porter Donut with Funky Buddha Brewery and the Maple Bacon Donut with Miami Smokers (R.I.P.).
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the Guava + Cheese and Maple Bacon are winners even before having taken a bite. I’ve never been a Boston Creme kinda guy, but yes, it’s good if this is your thing.
I much preferred the over-the-top Popcorn + Porter that uses Funky Buddha Brewery’s OP Porter for the glaze. I’ve got no doubt that it will be very popular on 4/20.
The two cake donuts (Brown Butter + Salt and Olive Oil + Citrus) were the surprises. I’ll take two dozen and call you in the morning.
Rename and Expansion
The Salty Donut shortened its name to just, The Salty prior to expanding into the Dallas, Texas market. They’ve also expanded their offerings with cookies, other baked goods, and even Kolaches.
Let’s see what they do next as they continue their expansion into other cities.
