My first taste of Skyline Chili at their Sunrise location over ten years ago was not a good one. Back then, I had a preconceived notion of how chili and chili dogs should taste. Now, hundreds of chili dogs later, I see the error of my ways. Since then, I’ve enjoyed Skyline Chili as well as Gold Star Chili and Price Hill Chili Family Restaurant in their hometown.
My friend El Comelon makes the hour drive all the time, and now that I’m all about Cincinnati Chili. I drove us to the Skyline in Ft. Lauderdale, after we had stopped in at Smoke BBQ first.
I ate two dogs, a Cheese Coney (mustard, onion, chili, and a mound of freshly shredded cheddar cheese) and an Extreme Habanero Cheese Coney (same as the regular but with a habanero cheddar blend of cheese). Yes, they were both excellent. I didn’t find the Habanero version hot, but then again, I’m not a wimp when it comes to heat.
Comelon had a regular Cheese Coney and also a four-way (spaghetti topped with shredded cheddar cheese, chili, and onions). He offered a bite of it, but I thought long after the fact that I should have tried out a 3-Way Potato along with only the Extreme Habanero Cheese Coney. Hey, you live, and you learn.
Plus, there’s always next time…counting the minutes till then.
