In 2007, before everyone claimed to be a smash burger expert, there was one chain restaurant that was already using the term. As a giant fan of the smash burger cooking technique and style, I was ecstatic to try a Smashburger burger.
Tom Ryan, the founder of Smashburger, previously served as a chief concept officer at McDonald’s, where he helped create the McGriddle. He also created the stuffed crust pizza at Pizza Hut.
What you’ll notice in the picture is the crust that is created when the meat sticks to the flat top and has to be scraped off. All the juices are locked in, and the meat stays nice and juicy, not dry and overcooked.
Just squeeze the burger, and the juices come oozing out. It was plain ol’ delicious.
Everyone around me was having one of the Smashburger specialty burgers. I tried my friend’s A1A Burger, which is their local specialty burger topped with chorizo.
I loved its light spiciness. Now I must go, but I’ll leave you in good company. Check out this Smashburger money shot.

Smashburger Celebrity Smasher
When Smashburger opened up in South Florida (1840 N. University Drive, Coral Springs), I was the “Celebrity Smasher” at the soft opening.
I ate the burger I cooked on the flat top with only cheese, and later on, when I had an opportunity to have another, I went the plain cheese route again. I couldn’t bring myself to add any other toppings to it.
But, as a Celebrity Smasher, I did the ceremonial first smash on the grill, which also involved having to be able to execute a flip after the meat had adhered itself to its 400-degree flat top.
I’ve done this a million times before, but I put a lot of undue pressure on myself. If you’re about to track down the video, you will see my look of relief when it’s over.
I looked proud of myself as if I had given birth to a child. The reality is that I was relieved that I didn’t mess up in front of a kitchen full of people.
