Comfort Food Snack Ideas for Home

Trying to figure out which comfort food snacks are great can be an overwhelming task. There are thousands of options these days, but how many of them are craveable?

During the pandemic, I was preoccupied with having things to snack on during this “mini-vacation.” I had never taken a deep dive into the variety of products available at my local supermarket. So Instacart, a web and app-based grocery delivery service, became my new best friend.

I could take my time to craft a perfect delivery with some traditional standards and a few newbies. But, to be clear, the newbies might have only been new to me.

I came across plenty of duds, but I’ve culled together a list of ten comfort food snacks I’ve enjoyed multiple times during the initial months of 2020. Since then, they’re now on my regular rotation of snacks to enjoy at home.

Aretha Frankenstein’s

Aretha Frankenstein’s Pancake and Waffle mixes are one of the items to make this list unavailable at your local supermarket unless you live in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they’re based. You will pay a premium price for these fellas, but I suggest you split the order with a couple of friends unless you are pancake or waffle-o-holic.

Marcela and I preferred the pancake mix. Also, check out my post about Aretha Frankenstein’s Pancake & Waffle Mixes.

Where can you find them online? Amazon sells Aretha Frankenstein‘s Pancake Mix in single or two-box bundles.

Chifles

When Chifles launched the regular Tostones chips, I had no idea a line of flavored ones was coming down the pike. The garlic-flavored tostones are my favorites, much like their regular plantain counterpart.

They recently launched some plantain sticks that will change your hot dog and sandwich topping world.

Where can you find them online? Amazon has a variety of different Chifles for sale in their store.

Finagle a Bagel

My hometown of Miami isn’t exactly setting the world on fire regarding housemade bagels. However, a freshly made bagel can make a great day even better whenever we’re on a road trip.

Well, the Finagle a Bagel’s Asiago Cheese does that for me. I slice one in half, pop it in my toaster, and then add my favorite bagel spread, typically jalapeño cream cheese.

Then, I sit back with a cup of coffee, enjoy my bagel, and think about how I will take over the world one bite of comfort food at a time.

Where can you find them online? Nope.

IncrediPuffs

When I was a kid, my dad worked for WISE potato chips. So my favorite WISE snack was the Cheese Doodles.

One bite of IncrediPuffs Saucilian Pizza and a flood of childhood memories came rushing back to me. I thought I had outgrown snacks like these, but I was wrong.

This isn’t the only flavor they make. There’s Elote, Cheesy Cheddar, Sizzlin’ Sriracha, and Cinnamon Apple Pie.

I’m excited to try the Cinnamon Apple Pie. I found this pack of goodness at Mendez Fuel, a local gas station with an excellent snack selection.

Where can you find them online? Nope.

Mambo

Since I’m in Miami, croquetas or croquettes can be found everywhere. So my croqueta obsession drove me to create a foodie event all about them called Croqueta Palooza.

Croquetas were my favorite comfort food snack before my fascination with burgers began. Locally, all supermarkets carry various frozen croqueta brands to fry at home.

Catalina is the most popular but not the best; Mambo is. Also, they are slightly larger than your average freezer aisle croqueta.

The flavor is richer, and when you add a few of them to a ham and cheese sandwich, you’ll be in heaven.

Mason Dixie Biscuits

Growing up, my mom bought those Pillsbury biscuits that always frightened you whenever you popped open the cylindrical container. Of course, my family ate them, but I can’t say that I ever remember enjoying them.

My discovery of the Mason Dixie line of biscuits has changed my thought on store-bought, ready-to-bake biscuits. There is no better biscuit on the market.

They have Buttermilk, Cheddar, Cheddar-Chive, Garlic Parmesan, Savory Herb, and Pumpkin Spice biscuits. There is also a Jalapeño Cheddar biscuit, which has not yet reached South Florida.

My current favorite is the Garlic Parmesan, with the regular Cheddar a close second. They are also the perfect size for pairing with the Starbucks Sous Vide Egg Bites.

Where can you find them online? Amazon Fresh has Mason Dixie Biscuits and Breakfast Sandwiches.

Pretzilla & President Pub Cheese

Did someone say Pretzilla? Pretzilla is these soft little pretzel balls that are perfect for dipping into pimento cheese, or so I hoped. I prefer the Palmetto brand of pimento cheese, which was sold out, so my Instacart shopper replaced it with President’s Cheddar & Horseradish spreadable cheese.

This must be one of the best food replacements on my behalf. The Pub Cheese is also great on hot dogs and cheeseburgers.

I might have also mistakenly used some to top off some french fries. Yes, I said by mistake, lol.

Where can you find them online? Amazon & Whole Foods Market sells Pretzilla Bites (or packs of 8), Burger Buns, Dinner Rolls, and Sausage Buns.

Screamin’ Sicilian Pizza

I had stopped eating frozen pizza until someone suggested I buy a Screamin’ Sicilian Pizza. Sure, it’s a little pricier than all the other hacks in the frozen food aisle, but this guy right here is next level.

From now on, if you’re in the supermarket and I see a Screamin’ Sicilian box in your cart, I know you mean business. How much business do I mean?

We’ve always got three flavors in our freezer: Bessie’s Revenge, Mother of Meat & Holy Pepperoni.

Where can you find them online? Amazon Fresh sells the 12-inch Screamin’ Sicilian Pizza.

Stacy’s Pita Chips

I’ve seen Stacy’s Pita Chips for years and wasn’t interested in them until I spotted a Fire Roasted Jalapeño flavor. The picture on the bag shows a pita chip taking a guac bath.

But, the Fire Roasted Jalapeño is partial to a pimento cheese tub visit, in my experience. Another perfect combo is with that President’s Pub Cheese I mentioned a few snacks back.

Where can you find them online? Stacy’s Pita Chips are available in Stacy’s Store on Amazon.

White Castle

When White Castle brought their Cravemobile to Miami, I hosted the event. Unfortunately, the only food on the Cravemobile menu was the Original Slider, Cheese Sliders, and Jalapeño Cheese Sliders.

Like the rookie I sometimes am, I only ate the Cheese Sliders. Since then, I’ve been to at least five White Castle locations, including their headquarters, and still no Jalapeño Cheese Sliders.

I have since made up for all that lost time by eating the microwaveable ones religiously. Some might not think they’re the same thing, but I have it on good authority that they are.

Plus, they’re freakin’ good.

Where can you find them online? White Castle Original and Cheese Sliders are available on Amazon Fresh.

  1. I think I cook pancakes wrong. Those look amazing. Maybe the oil is too hot. Any recommendations for cooking methods?
