I’ve been eating from the Big Cheese for what seems like forever, right around 30 years. It was a jolt to the system a few years back when I discovered that the original location they opened (February 17th, 1984) was across the street.
Yes, the original site for the Big Cheese was the current space where Wall’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream (8075 SW 67th Avenue) sits. I can imagine how ridiculous the lines must have been then since they are still ridiculous now.
Get the Garlic Rolls
There’s been one constant whenever I eat at the Big Cheese, the garlic rolls, which are one of the best you’ll ever have. The rolls are freshly baked with lots of garlic on top, great stuff.
Another great way to start your lunch, or any meal, is with fried mozzarella cheese. Typically Marcela stays away from anything too cheesy, but she’s all about these fellas, and I can’t blame her; we highly recommend the sticks.
Before I forget, the best seat in the house is at the pizza pit. You can sit on one of the red stools and watch the action.
The special for the day was a spaghetti parmesan which is right in Marcela’s wheelhouse. Although, she also can’t say no to a hearty ziti dish.
When my eyes opened today, I knew a meatball sub was in the cards. Sure, I could go with a half, but why when the other half will make for a most excellent lunch tomorrow?
It had been years since my last meatball hero at Big Cheese, and it tasted exactly as I remembered it. The best part? I have the other half scheduled for dinner tonight.
Sure, I know what I said earlier, but that’s before I realized that I couldn’t sleep tonight thinking about the lonely half left in the darkness of the to-go box.
As much as I loved the cheese pizza, I regretted not ordering their White Pizza. It was my go-to pie back in tha day.
There’s always next time cause if there’s one thing you can count on, the Big Cheese will be there waiting with comfort food to satisfy.
