In my neverending quest to try every burger-related supermarket product, I have found Wao Bao‘s Bao Cheeseburger. While I’ve been known to enjoy a bao bun occasionally, it’s not necessarily among my comfort food favorites.
On their website, there is a find a store feature. In South Florida, the Bao Cheeseburger is only available at Fresh Market, but I’m a Walmart grocery guy. So, I DM’d them through their Instagram.
They offered to ship some directly to me, which I accepted. Why wouldn’t I want to solve this problem quickly?
Wow Bao, not only sent five boxes of the Cheeseburger Bao, but also a box with branded goodies (more on that later). Each box comes with four frozen bao buns.
Hot to Cook, aka Stovetop Steam Instructions
- In a wok or pan, bring 2 – 3 inches of water to a boil
- Place frozen bao in a steamer basket and place the basket in a wok or pan, being careful not to get bao wet
- For best results, ensure bao do not touch each other or the sides of the basket
- Steam for 10 minutes with the lid on
- When removing the lid from the pan, tilt the lid so water doesn’t drop onto the bao
- Remove the wok or pan from heat, keeping the bao covered with a lid and allowing it to cool slightly before enjoying
I’m at my parent’s house, so the Stovetop Steam instructions were useless without a steam basket. Now, I was left with the least desirable method of heating: the microwave.
As instructed, I placed two cheeseburger baos on a plate and covered them with a damp paper towel. One minute and twenty seconds later, I removed them from the micro and discarded the paper towel.
The baos sat there until they reached a temperature that would not scorch my mouth. And don’t forget to peel off the paper on the bottom of each bao!
If you’re going to make a mistake when cooking, make sure to undershoot and not overshoot on the times. If these fellas get overcooked, I can’t imagine it would be a pleasant experience.
What I’m trying to tell you is to follow the instructions.
How was the Wow Bao Cheeseburger Bao?
The Wow Bao cheeseburger steamed buns filled with seasoned ground beef, onions, cheddar cheese, and secret sauce appear to have ketchup, mustard, and dill pickle relish. Thankfully, the baos were fluffy and not overcooked. Although, I need to try the steamed version for comparison.
The cheeseburger elements taste like a White Castle slider. It is a food mashup that I didn’t know I needed.
Even though the Wow Bao website clearly states that the baos should stand independently without any sauce, we live in the era of dipping sauces. I’m just saying that dipping them in a burger sauce would enhance the entire presentation.
The Wow Bao Cheeseburger Bao is 100% Burger Beast Approved.

Wow Bao at Walmart
Wow Bao has a giant selection at Walmart, where I do 99% of my grocery shopping.
I’ve already bought the Chinese-style BBQ Pork and Thai-style Curry Chicken (which might be discontinued), both of which were great. The Mongolian-style Spicy Beef and Teriyaki Chicken are currently in my online cart.
DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats
There’s a section on their website that refers to a Dark Kitchen. It’s a Wow Bao ghost kitchen with more than 600 locations nationwide, with a heavy amount in my home state of Florida.
The expanded Wow Bao menu features bowls, fried rice, dumplings, egg rolls, potstickers, and baos. A quick Google search shows you can order via DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats.
Wow Bao Goodies
As I mentioned earlier, they sent me this pretty red box filled with goodies in addition to the five boxes of Wow Bao Cheeseburger Baos.
Now I have a way to steam the baos; I wish I had opened this box first instead of a week later. The nice touches were the bamboo steamer basket and the Wow Bao branded cell phone portable charger.
