Imagine my surprise while scrolling around a food delivery app and coming across a new restaurant with Venezuelan comfort food like tequeños, cachapas, perros, and burgers. The recently opened Plaza Venezuela 305 in West Miami was responsible for the menu with my name written all over it.
So, these tequeños (cheese wrapped in dough) with an awesome guava BBQ dipping sauce were a pleasant surprise. I had never tried that combo before; weirdly enough, it works.
You can’t go wrong with a buttery cheese-stuffed cachapa. This is my favorite Venezuelan snack, but it’s not for everyone.
A cachapa consists of folding a corn pancake with a half-moon-shaped, sizeable amount of queso de mano (Venezuela hand-made white cheese) and then covering it in butter. It could be a meal in itself, but it’s in the appetizer or starter category for me.
In some parts of Venezuela, they call this dog an asquerosito. Plaza Venezuela named it a Perro Caraqueño in reference to Caracas, Venezuela, where it was popularized.
The more common name for this type of hot dog is a Perro Caraqueño, a reference to a wiener covered or smothered (depending on how you look at it) in shredded cheese, slaw, corn, ketchup, and garlic mayo. This amount of toppings is not as over the top as I’ve encountered elsewhere.
If you like your dog smothered and covered, this is the fella for you.
It Gets Ugly Beautiful
Like their hot dog, they also have a killer sloppy Chacao Burger at Plaza Venezuela, named after the municipality in Caracas. This beauty overloads your taste buds with a housemade seasoned burger patty, American cheese, coleslaw, bacon, potato sticks, and garlic sauce.
I said beautiful, but I meant ugly-beautiful, which is fine by me as long as it tastes great.
