When someone suggested I try the meatloaf sandwich from Bonjour French Bakery, I first looked up the address. Hammocks? Wow, 45 minutes from my house.
When the maps suggest you take Krome Avenue by the Miccosukee Casino & Resort, you know you’re in for a drive. And sometimes that’s ok when the restaurant delivers the goods.
Marcela and I walked in, totally unprepared. We were overwhelmed by the menu. Starting with their freshly made lemonade was a great idea, but I knew we were sharing when Marcela ordered water.
We Agree on 4 Dishes
We agreed on four dishes, but only the eggs benedict “belonged” to Marcela. Quiche Lorraine, or as I like to think of it, a ham and cheese sandwich in pie form, was crusty and oh-so tasty. Plus, I’m a giant fan of cubed ham in dishes.
If you’re unfamiliar with the delicacy of Croque Madame, please let me introduce you. Imagine, if you will (in my best Dusty Rhodes voice), a ham, cheese, and bechamel cream sandwich with melted cheese and fried egg on top.
If you’re keeping tabs at home, this makes two consecutive ham and cheese dishes in a row. No, I’m not embarrassed by my lack of variety since both were off-the-charts good.
The eggs benedict were two poached eggs on ham with brioche bread and smothered in Hollandaise sauce. I was frightened by the two crisscrossed greens warding me off.
Also, considering Marcela‘s happiness while eating “her dish,” it was a safe bet that I kept my hands clear of the plate. On the Facebook post about our meal, she said, and I quote, “Best Eggs Benedict!!“
Meatloaf Gone but Not Forgotten
The meatloaf came on crusty bread with bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and Dijon mustard spread on the bottom bun. I did not want to share, and luckily, Marcela was so involved with her egg benedict that I had this fella all to myself.
The Meatloaf Bien-Aime sandwich was phenomenal, and sadly, a few weeks later, it was removed from the menu. We’ll always have that time together, and I think of it fondly.
I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of Bonjour French Bakery‘s menu. There was a roast beef sandwich, French onion soup, and a beef bourguignon calling my name, and I promised not to leave them hanging, so I’ll be back!
Just a heads up, in addition to their Hammocks (Kendall) restaurant, there are locations in Weston and Pembroke Pines.
