I call my cousin Fred and tell him, “Pick me up; I got a place for us to eat.” I knew I wanted to check out Jaguar or Taurus in Coconut Grove.
Using my phone’s trusty GPS, I program the address, and we’re off walking through Coconut Grove. No matter how close I get, I never arrive at the location.
Could I have written down the wrong info for Jaguar? I would later find out that I didn’t write down the address incorrectly but that the site had it listed wrong.
Fred and I have been walking around for 20 minutes, and the heat has not been kind to us. It’s horrifically (believe it or not, this word exists, I looked it up to make sure) hot.
We decide to check out Taurus, but the GPS on my phone does not fail me this time. We see it in the distance and are positive it’s not a mirage.
At last, we arrive, and in a stroke of the kind of luck we’re having, we’re 45 minutes too early. They don’t open until 4.
Do we wait or seek out another place to eat? We’re on our way again, and I suggest Mr. Moe’s. We walk in, sit at the booth and realize our knees are touching.
Yeah….I don’t think so.
Sandbar Sports Grill It Is!
We get up and walk out. Fred suggests Sandbar Sports Grill, and I agree. I remember eating and having a few beers at Sandbar some years ago.
I order the Sandbar Sampler (chicken fingers, corn nuggets, and popcorn shrimp), the Baja Sampler, some classic buffalo wings, and Joey-style wings. The server had mistakenly put in for the Boardwalk Sampler instead of the Baja Sampler, which was a problem.
I don’t get to try their Southwest chimi rolls, taquitos, nachos, and quesadillas. Instead, I get o-rings (I’m OK with that), coconut shrimp (not necessarily a favorite of mine), calamari (not a fan of breaded bubblegum), and wings, which we had already ordered.
As our table is now covered with plates.
Cheeseburger In Paradise?
I make the move and order the Cheeseburger In Paradise. I think a better name is in order here, but I’ll keep all suggestions to myself. It would be too easy.
The food is better suited to a drunk or drinking crowd. It’s pretty good bar food, but nothing stands out except the Joey-style wings with their sweet and spicy flavor.
The cheeseburger was pretty standard stuff, definitely not fresh beef. The fries were greasy; imagine how bad they had to be for me to say that.
As we’re done and leaving, I have the worst revelation of all, not only is Jaguar across the street from Sandbar Sports Grill, but we parked in the garage right next to it.
I was so involved with my phone that I didn’t realize we walked right by it. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
So if you’re looking for a spot in Coconut Grove to take a load off, grab a cold beer & eat some bar food, then Sandbar Sports Grill has your name all over it.
