Archive for Fries

BurgerFi has been open for a little while now but I put off checking it out since all I would really hear about it are the Shake Shack comparisons. There is no doubt that this is indeed a Shack Shack clone down to having Concretes (Frozen Custard). They do however have more options when it comes to dressing your burger but how does the food stack up to the Shack?

Burger Monger – Tampa, Florida

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I love cartoon characters and/or mascots from the burger chains’ early days. So I always get excited when some never indie joint has decided have their own dude (or dudette) representing the place. On the flip-side of this coin, you always hope that the resto has some good food or it’s just a waste of a monger.

My wife was with me but just wanted something to drink so I took this opportunity to order her a Hershey Chocolate Häagen-Dazs Milk Shake that she didn’t want (maybe she didn’t but I needed to try it). I go for the Fries (Double Order which is 1 pound), Chili Dog and The Burger Monger (6 oz. of Akaushi Kobe Beef).

Hershey's Chocolate Shake

The shake arrives and I watch the person who claimed they didn’t want any, slurping away. I take a taste and it’s just like a milk shake version of a Hershey’s candy bar (makes sense I guess). The fries are crispy, delicious and since I don’t end up eating them all taken to go.

Crispy Fries

Chili Cheese Dog

The Hot Dog is also Akaushi Beef and topped with an amazing chili sauce. This could be, might be and is, probably the Best Chili Dog I’ve ever had. Honestly, no joke. I loved it and I’m still thinking of it lovingly like a love affair from summer camp in junior high.

Cheeseburger with Buttery Toasted Bun in the back

Cheese Burger waiting for me

There’s nothing like a fresh baked bun to get you excited about what’s in-between it. The burger had a nice char, was very flavorful and at 6 oz wasn’t too big of burger. If it’s too small for you, you can go “The Monster Monger” route which are 2 – 8 oz. patties. I chose to go with good ole’ neon yellow American which was the right choice. The buns are mildly garlic buttered which I didn’t care for. I’m gonna assume you can ask for it just toasted which I will do next time. And yes, there will be a next time.

CG Burgers in Kendall, Florida

Posted by: | Comments (4)

I’ve been to the CG Burgers in Kendall 3 times and I’ve had great experiences every time. The only thing I don’t care for is the ordering system which seems to get backed up very easily. You walk in, look over the menu and order but it takes longer than it should. It might not even be CG Burgers fault, it could be just dummy customers which is what I’m leaning towards.

CG Hot Dog

I only tried the hot dog the first time and it was a great beef hot dog. He was sliced in half which I happen to like. I added some mustard and I was good to go.

CG Fries

CG Onion Rings

On the “Sides” front you have 4 options: Hand Cut Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Zucchini Fries and Onion Rings. My pick hands down were the fresh cut fries. I enjoyed them each time I ordered them. Sweet Potato Fries and Onion Rings (one time they were a bit too oily) were good. My wife had the Zucchini Fries and loved them. I’m not a Zucchini kinda dude but they look appetizing.

CG Burger w/Cheese

There are 9 burgers on the “Classics” menu. You also have the option of ordering a Kobe, Bison or Turkey Burger on the specialty side. I gotta say that I preferred the CG Burger over the Kobe (American not Japanese) Burger. The CG Burger which is a double stack with just cheese was perfect for me. When I tried to add a whole bunch of condiments it died a slow painful death. Keep it simple, at least I did.

I closed out one of the nights with a Gelato Shake of half Vanilla Bean and half Dark Chocolate. So good and the perfect end to a solid burger & fries.

You just can’t trust the GPS on your phone. I’ve been wanting to buy one for use exclusively in my car (where else would I use it?) and it would have come in handy today. I get lost in Downtown easily but luckily Sparky’s Roadside Barbecue was easy to find after my disastrous attempt to drive down a one way road thanks to my GPS.

I walked in and could smell the BBQ goodness in the air. I felt right at home as this isn’t one of those trendy pretentious places trying to pass themselves as a barbecue joint.  While I don’t consider myself a BBQ expert I do consider myself an “experto” at spotting a fake.

Sparky's Wings

I was kinda torn as to which of the appetizers to go for but the Wings and Corn Nuggets ended up being my choices. I wanted to try the Hush Puppies also but I figured there’s always next time if I dig this place. The Wings were awesomely smokey and delicious but those Corn Nuggets. Damn those guys! The Corn Nuggets are breaded cream of corn deep fried. They’re served with a side of ranch for dipping but it’s really not necessary. Wow.

Sparky's Corn Nuggets

Corn Nuggets Up Close

My wife Marcela orders Tyler’s Pressed Sandwich (Brisket, Pulled Pork, Sauteed Onions, American Cheese & BBQ Sauce) while I go for the obvious choice of the half pound Angus Beef Burger w/American Cheese. The sandwiches are served with Waffle Fries (interesting) and Coleslaw (not my cup of tea). There are a bunch of sauces at the table, six to be exact. Sparky’s BBQ Sauce was my favorite of the 6 but the one labeled “Magma” is sure to guarantee a bad time for the person who doesn’t realize the serious heat they’re about to take on.

1/2 Pound Angus Burger

I liked Tyler’s Pressed Sandwich but I wish we had just decided to have the Brisket or the Pulled Pork individually. I’m not trying to dissuade you from having this I just think since it was our first time here we should have tried out the goods solo. Now, as for the burger…..well I was kinda speechless. It was so good, since the smokey taste permeated the patty. It had 2 slices of American Cheese and nothing else on it. I barely touched the waffle fries. I was mesmerized by it so much so that I ordered a second one.

Cornbread & Mac'n Cheese

Mac'n Cheese

The Mac’n Cheese and Cornbread were both fresh and solid. Good stuff and the Cornbread ended up being my guinea pig for the sauces I mentioned before. Also try the Apple Wood and Hickory Smoked Boneless Chicken Thigh, it’s killer.

Sparky's Chalkboard

Burger numero dos arrives and I don’t even remember eating it but I know I did. And I’d suggest you do the same. When you go save me a seat!

Mamasita’s Taqueria is located right at the port of Costa Maya. After having paid some dude to take is into the city where we were stopped by some sort of checkpoint, and checking out what local spots there were, I decided it might be safer to eat at the port (for sanitary reasons). In retrospect, I probably should have taken my chances with the other grub. Mamasita’s does have Taqueria in its name so I’m thinking they gotta hit those out of the ballpark. Nachos, Quesadillas too, what the hell, it’s Mexican right?

Costa Maya Nachos
Quesadillas

The only thing Mexican or authentic about this place is the soil it was built on. This is the same food you’ll find at those chain Tex-Mex joints all over the city.

not so authentic Tacos

The tacos have CHEESE for God’s sake, yes CHEESE. Jack and cheddar cheeses on authentic tacos, I don’t think so!

papitas of the frozen variety

This place sells fries, I couldn’t resist and ordered them. Just as I thought, the frozen variety.

the ol’ under the tab routine

Why does everyone at all the ports put straws under the tab on the can of soda? My suggestion if you find yourself at Costa Maya, stay away unless you plan to get drunk and then who really cares what you’re eating. Actually I do, lol.

Prime 112 – South Beach, Florida

Posted by: | Comments (5)

My buddy (an actual friend not the 1980′s toy) called me up and tells me that I must eat at Prime One Twelve. What do I know about Prime One Twelve? It seems as if every celebrity that visits Miami ends up there. In other words, it’s a place that does not normally interest me. After looking over the menu I have a change of heart, comfort food heaven. The prices of course are higher than my usual hot spots. I figured let’s do this, if it’s worth it I’m always willing to pay.

We head out for lunch and decide to make the hard decisions, we order (our table is pictured above): Tomato Basil Soup w/ Mini Fontina Grilled Cheese, Five Cheese Truffle ‘MAC’, KOBE Beef Hot Dog, 1 lb. KOBE Cheeseburger, Sea Salt Baked Potato w/ Vermont Butter, Applewood Smoked Bacon Bits and Chive Sour Cream , Potato Pancakes and Crispy White Truffle French Fries.

Now you must be thinking, there’s no way they ate all that food and you would be correct. Everything was delicious, except for the potato pancakes which I found to be way too crispy and not potato-ey enough. And one last thing, it would be great if they removed the name KOBE from the burger and dog because we all know it’s not authentic KOBE from Japan. For your drooling pleasure, please check out all the pics below especially the one with the bacon chunks on top of the baked potato.

Yeah! Burger – Atlanta, Georgia

Posted by: | Comments (4)

Thanks to Cheese-burger.Net for writing this up & sending this our way.

Atlanta is unquestionably a great burger town. Legendary joints like the Vortex Bar and Grill and Ann’s Snack Bar were dishing out world-class cheebies well before the burger boom. Now the landscape is positively packed with primo patty purveyors: Holeman & Finch and Flip Burger Boutique opened in 2008, Grindhouse Killer Burgers entered the scene in 2009, and Farm Burger debuted in 2010. And the hits just keep on coming. Let me introduce you to the newest combatant in the A-T-L’s ongoing burger war… Yeah! Burger.

A smallish storefront in one of those ultra-chic intown warehouse districts, Yeah! Burger is the brainchild of longtime Atlanta chef Shaun Doty. The vibe is quirky and cool, a mix of old-school retro and hipster modern.

Despite mixed reviews, there always seems to be a crowd, and such was the case last week when I stopped in for a weekday lunch, a steady line of folks studying the laminated menus as they queued up to place their order.

Yeah! Burger promises a double-stack of high-quality, grass-fed third-pounders, made in-house and “free of antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, herbicides, ammonia, and preservatives.” Got a beef with beef? You can go bison, turkey, veggie, or chicken breast instead… or try your luck with the Burger of the Month. (November’s happened to be a “crab burger,” a jumbo-lump crab cake on a bun, which really stretches the “burger” classification to me, but whatever.)

Then you start custom-building your burger. You choose from three different bun types (more on the bun in a minute), six organic cheeses, eight free toppings, eight $1 toppings, and fifteen sauces ranging from white BBQ to sunflower pesto. Fighting back the urge to let my inner gourmet run wild, I played it close to the vest for my maiden voyage. I needed a burger baseline to start with, so I opted for a plain-jane beef burger with American cheese on a white bun and no toppings.

I did ask for Yeah! sauce (chipotle-tinged mayo, perhaps?) on the side, thinking I could add it if the burger was on the dry side (the menu specifies only medium to medium-well)… or just use it as a dip for my half-and-half order of fries and onion rings.

First visual impression: my God, look at that cheese! Beautifully melted, almost liquefied, enrobing those patties in velvety awesomeness. Go on, take a closer look. I did.

First taste impression: I said earlier that Yeah! Burger has opened to mixed reviews, and I’d agree. “Phenomenal” mixed with “spectacular.” I flat-out loved this burger from the word go. The beef was thoroughly juicy, even if a tad under seasoned. The cheese was just as good as it looks, coating every single bite in creamy perfection.

But that bun! Maybe the best bun I’ve ever had. Doty personally developed the “Southern White” bun along with H&F Bread Co., a local outfit that supplies over 60 of Atlanta’s top-tier restaurants. It’s a work of art. Nice texture, just the right amount of squish, but substantial enough to not disintegrate. Right down to the last bite, with the burger still dripping profusely, the bun held its own and soaked up that liquid gold like a champ.

Yeah! Burger also features a full bar with beer, wine, spirits, and a roster of signature cocktails. Personally, I was more interested in the milkshakes, cane-soda floats, and concretes (the old-fashioned name for a DQ Blizzard), but I decided against it. This was almost a perfect burger experience, and I didn’t want to risk tainting it. Leave a tender moment alone, the Piano Man once said. Will I be back to try it again sometime? Well… Yeah!

While walking around what is the tourist trap area of Cozumel, I came across this Burger King. I had no intentions to order anything but once I took a look at the menu and saw the “Cheesy Whopper”, I knew there was no way I was leaving empty handed. My father was with me and mentioned that he wanted Jalapeno Poppers. Poppers….wait, what else is there here to try? And so began my downward spiral into a massive order.

Cheesy Whopper and some Family King Meal in Mexican Pesos
Cheesecake Bites, I decided against these
The Wings I couldn’t say no to

In the picture on their counter the “Alitas” aka Wings look roasted but they’re actually fried with hot sauce drizzled on top of them. They were your run of the mill wings with a nothing special hot sauce on them. The wings are also available topped with BBQ sauce but some blue cheese might have been a nice gesture.

Burger King’s Alitas

The Jalapeno Poppers came 4 to an order. Burger King carried these in late 2000 and I found myself ordering them back then. They’re not too shabby, just like what you’d expect them to taste (please keep all thoughts to yourself).

Jalapeno Poppers
Getting inside a Popper

Next up was the Papas Fundidas which were fries topped with cheese sauce, bacon bits and Jalapenos. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t place the taste of the cheese but what was worse were the bacon bits. The bacon bits were Bac-O’s which I think are pretty gross.

Papas Fundidas

The Cheesy Whopper is a Whopper topped with a breaded cheese patty. I ordered a single Whopper but I wonder if I had order the double would they have placed the cheese in-between them. I asked for no lettuce or tomato thinking it would come plain but it came with mayo and ketchup. The Whopper didn’t have that much of that BK grill taste while it still retained somehow it’s Burger King taste somehow. The cheese itself reminded me of Cheesy Tots they were selling until recently. I like the concept and hope we’ll be seeing it in the US soon and maybe even on the chicken sandwich.

And just when you think I couldn’t have possibly ordered anything else, I did. The Burger King deep fried Apple Pie, something that has not been on their menu since the 1980′s. It looks just like the McDonald’s version which can still be found if you really look but the taste is different. Burger King’s fried Apple Pie is closer to a funnel cake and less of an apple taste.

It was cool to try some fast food in Cozumel but I regret driving by the McDonald’s and not stopping, who knows what can be found there.
